Dental FAQs in Clifton, NJ

What is dentistry?

Dentistry involves care provided to ensure the ability to smile with confidence, eat well and with comfort, and to be sure that the oral cavity is free from infection or disease.

What should I look for when choosing a dentist?

Choosing your oral healthcare partner is an important decision. Pick a doctor who places importance on listening to your concerns, who understands there is often more than one solution to a problem, and who places emphasis on continuing education so that they can provide the best care dentistry has to offer.

We also believe you should consider the overall experience provided by a practice. At Clifton Dental Arts, we have an enthusiastic team that loves what we do. We build relationships with our patients, and they become part of our practice family. We enjoy the satisfaction that comes from helping patients achieve their dental goals. We are excited about the ways that new technology is helping us create healthy smiles easier, faster, and more comfortably than ever before.

Why do I need to visit the dentist?

Many dental concerns exist with no symptoms. By visiting Clifton Dental Arts regularly, problems can be identified early, which often leads to a simpler and often more cost-effective treatment. Waiting until there is pain present usually means the problem has progressed and requires more advanced dentistry.

We recommend visiting our Clifton dental office every six months for an exam and professional cleaning. During your visit with your hygienist, you’ll receive customized recommendations beyond brushing and flossing based on your individual needs and abilities.

What dental services do you provide?

Dr. Ference and the Clifton Dental Arts team provide comprehensive dentistry for children and adults, including:

  • Restoration of decayed and fractured teeth
  • Replacement of missing teeth
  • Early periodontal disease (gum disease)
  • Same-day crowns using CEREC® CAD-CAM
  • Oral appliances to treat sleep apnea

Additionally, we offer digital impressions, eliminating the need to place "goop" in the mouth, which is especially good for patients with a sensitive gag reflex.

Do I need to visit the dentist if I have braces?

Yes! Brackets and wires create many obstacles to routine home care, and often plaque and debris can be found after brushing. Our hygienist can use specialized instruments to be sure teeth are completely clean.  They can also provide recommendations for areas that are challenging. In addition, we closely monitor the gums and the teeth for signs of problems such as gingivitis or decalcifications that may progress to decay. The earlier we find a problem, the easier the solution in most cases.

What happens during my first visit?

During your first visit to our Clifton dental office, you will meet with Dr. Ference to discuss any specific concerns you have and to ask questions regarding the practice and your care. For most patients, we will take a complete set of X-rays and photographs which will be reviewed by the doctor. You may also be seen by the hygienist to evaluate your gums and jawbones, and to clean your teeth. An examination will be completed and the findings will be reviewed with you by Dr. Ference.
